Facial Plastic Surgery Becoming Popular With Men

Six weeks ago, 57-year-old Joel Berstein had facial plastic surgery. His goals are subtle changes and fast healing.

"My concerns with having surgery were how long I would be down or out of work, not being able to do my normal things in life and I was concerned that I don't look, that I didn't look that different," he said.

He turned to his friend, Dr. Barry Zide for a chin implant. Surgery to create a stronger chin, sometimes even a dimpled chin, is becoming more popular with men.

"The popularity is for the size, and for symmetry. Not necessarily for the cleft," said Dr. Zide.

Like all surgeries, chin implants have risks. They include infection, bleeding and nerve damage. The surgeon inserts a silicone rubber implant either from inside the mouth or under the chin. Dr. Zide says under the chin is safer, with fewer complications.

"Put the implant in from inside, made it difficult to set the implant in exactly the right position number one and number two, to put the implant in from an incision under the chin, the scar is no more visible anyway," he said.

Joel's results are exactly what he'd hoped for.

"People just tell me I look great. It's kind of funny. I mean they just say you look rested. You look great. That's been, no one, I don't even think, had the thought that I might have had surgery," said Berstein.

His "Just back from vacation" look will last all year long.
