The Need for Wellness

A well body is both physically and mentally fit. Unfortunately, according to the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive and Kidney Diseases, two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight and almost one-third are obese. Excess weight is usually caused by a high fat/high calorie diet and lack of regular exercise. As the pounds increase, so do the health risks. Overweight people are at higher risk for many chronic medical conditions, like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and certain types of cancer.

Mental wellness is also important for a healthy body. But day to day stress can take a toll. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly two-thirds of Americans are trying to reduce stress in their lives. Stress can cause an elevation in blood pressure and heart rate and increases in blood sugar levels. Excessive stress is linked to an increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, stomach ulcers and back pain. Stress can also contribute to depression, anxiety and an increased risk for accidents.

Spas for Wellness

Spas have had a place in history for a long time. The ancient Greeks and Romans built "bath houses" to cleanse the body of disease and provide places for relaxation. Over the next several hundred years, public bath houses fell in and out of favor many times. By the 17th century, spa treatments (hot and cold spas) had become a very serious business. Today, spa treatment is recognized as an important component of therapy for many different kinds of problems, like arthritis, certain skin diseases and reduction of stress. Spa offerings may include steam baths, saunas, whirlpools, mud packs (or similar treatments), exercise, and/or massage and relaxation therapy. Some hospitals are recognizing the benefits of spa therapy and offer spa services to their patients.

The Medical Spa

Spa vacations are popular destinations for many people. One resort in Arizona is combining the best of spa services with medical consultations. The goal of Miraval Life in Balance® is to provide a balanced program emphasizing physical, mental and spiritual wellness.

When clients check into the resort, they are given the opportunity to have a blood test and assessment by a physician. The information helps staff to develop a comprehensive spa program based on the individual needs of the client. The spa offers traditional programs, like stretching, meditation, yoga and massage. In addition, there are classes to help address health concerns, like healthy meal planning and cooking. Clients can also choose from a variety of other fun activities, such as photography, writing and equine (horse) therapy. There are classes for adults only, couples, women in midlife and even smoking cessation.

The programs at Miraval are medically based and supervised by a physician. Dan Hirsch, V.P. of Business Development, says a stay helps clients return home with a better knowledge of integrated wellness for the body, mind and spirit.
