KUBU SIMBELANG, Indonesia -- It was a precaution and no further action appears necessary. That's what the World Health Organization said Saturday about its request to the maker of Tamiflu to get ready after a human bird flu transmission scare in Indonesia. It's the first time such a request has been made. The director of WHO's rapid response and containment group in Geneva said a precautionary 9,500 doses along with protective gear was flown into Indonesia Monday. It took about 72 hours to arrive. He described it as a procedure put in place in the event of suspected human transmission.Six of the seven members of an extended Indonesian family in North Sumatra who caught bird flu have died. The WHO has stressed the virus has not mutated into a version easily passed between people or shown signs of spreading outside the family.Avian influenza, or bird flu, is a contagious disease of animals causes by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. The bird flu virus could evolve into a form that is easily spread between people, becoming highly contagious. Since people would have no natural immunity to it, it could cause widespread death and illness.
