CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Students say Charlotte-Mecklenburg School administrators aren't doing enough to stop bullying in schools. The school board had a first reading of a proposed "Anti-Bullying" Policy Tuesday night, and plenty of people had strong opinions about it.One student, and several parents said the policy is long overdue, and CMS schools will remain an unsafe learning environment until it's put in place. Some school board members don't like the wording of the proposed policy. It states bullying based on a number of categories including 'race, color, sex, religion, creed, political belief, age, national origin, sexual orientation, height, or weight" won't be tolerated. Some board members say the list of categories should be taken out.Others say this is a waste of the board of education's time, because rules against bullying are already listed in the Student Code of Conduct Handbook. The proposed policy will also give students a way to report bullying or harassment, and provide training for teachers and CMS personnel. The board will hear public comments on the issue at their March 11th meeting. They've also vote whether to adopt the policy at that same meeting.
