KING MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Our newspaper partner the Gaston Gazette reporting that moments after Kings Mountain's win over Charlotte Catholic in the fourth round of the 3A girl's soccer playoffs, head coach Dan Potter's daughter, Megan, made a simple statement to her father."There's not a weak spot on the field," said Megan, a former player at Kings Mountain, about the current Lady Mountaineers. The Mountaineers (24-1) bring a balanced attack into Saturday's state championship match against three-time defending champion, Jacksonville White Oak (21-0). Game time is 10 a.m. at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State University.A pair of juniors, Ramey Kerns and Meagan Reynolds, have led Kings Mountain's offensive attack. Kerns has 29 goals and 12 assists, while Reynolds has 28 assists to go with 25 goals. In the midfield, senior Ashley Witherspoon (14 assists) and junior Megan Loftin (11 assists) have contributed 13 goals apiece. As impressive as those numbers are, Kings Mountain has an equally dominating defense. With junior Heather Stevens in goal, the Lady Mountaineers have tied a school record for shutouts (16) and set the record for least goals allowed in a season (12 in 25 games).Kings Mountain's defense is led by three seniors - Jordan Doty, Alex Edwards and Brooke Hayes - along with junior Mallory Mansfield. Sophomore Connor Blalock likely would have been the team's starting sweeper, but tore her ACL two games into the season."The kids that score a lot of goals get a lot of headlines, but there are no weak links on our team," Potter said. "We've had a lot of kids step up. I love the balance our team has."KM, ranked sixth in the latest N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 3A poll, will certainly need that full, team effort in order to take down White Oak. The Lady Vikings have been ranked No. 1 all season and have given up just three goals all season and none in four playoff games. On the season, White Oak has outscored its opponents, 151-3.Kings Mountain's ratio is 107-12.Senior Stephanie Rose, the MVP of last year's state championship game and a UNC-Wilmington signee, leads White Oak's offensive attack. Rea Sheoviano is the three-year starter in goal for the Vikings."White Oak is a very strong team. They're the thee-time defending 3A champion and have been ranked No. 1 all season," Potter said. "They're loaded. I've been reading a lot on the soccer forums and basically everyone's saying they're unstoppable. I know they've got an outstanding attacker (Rose) that's set a lot of records."Potter has seen this year's senior class take the program to new heights - claiming four-straight Southwestern 2A/3A Conference championships and becoming the most winning senior class in school history. In addition to the senior starters, midfielder Brittany Rodden and defender Rachael Perkins will also be playing in their final games."It's a fitting way for this senior class to go out. They've taken the program up and taken it as far as it can go," Potter said. "We've earned our chance to go for it given the teams we've beat. This team has proven a lot to a lot of people. They deserve it."KM's playoff scores
