Destiny's Child Michelle Williams 'proudly, happily' sought mental health treatment

Destiny Child's singer Michelle Williams is opening up about being treated for mental health issues.

The 37-year-old mental health advocate told her fans that she followed her own advice and “sought help from a great team of healthcare professionals.”

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Williams wrote: "For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it's time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing."

“I recently listened to the same advice I have given to thousands around the world," she continued.

USA TODAY has reached out to Williams' representative for further comment.

The Grammy Award-winning singer has been outspoken about her battles with depression, even revealing she has felt suicidal in the past.

"I didn't know until I was in my thirties what was going on. I just thought it was growing pains," Williams said in an interview with The Talk last fall. "I've been suffering since the age of between 13 and 15. At that age, I didn't know what to call it."

Friends and fans alike are applauding Williams’ honesty.

Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom, called Williams a warrior under her Instagram post.

"Michelle My Belle, I 'm so proud of you! You have given unselfishly of your time and support to so many and I know that you will be the best example of self-care, which we all need. Keep being a warrior and an advocate for you. I love and support you with all my being."

Solange Knowles also sent her well wishes in a comment.

"Love u so Michelle ! really proud of you. Sending u all the love in the world."

Former Destiny’s Child member LaTavia Roberson told Williams she is not alone.

Williams concluded her statement by encouraging everyone to prioritize their mental health to “change your life.”

"Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need," she said.
