American League Game Capsules

POSTED: 2:46 am EDT July 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina hurled six scoreless innings, and New York survived a late scare to clip Boston, 2-1, in the third installment of a four-game series from Yankee Stadium. Mussina (11-6) allowed four hits in his outing, striking out five and walking one to record his first win since June 14. Mariano Rivera allowed two hits and a run in the ninth but held on to record his 23rd save. Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner had an RBI each for the Yankees, who won for the second time in their last seven. Justin Masterson (4-3) took the loss, his third in the last five starts. He surrendered six hits and two runs over six full frames and also hit three batters. Mike Lowell drove in a run while Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch three times for the Red Sox, who have dropped six of eight.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Kansas City 0

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Ben Zobrist tripled and homered, and Andy Sonnanstine threw seven shutout innings, as the Tampa Bay Rays topped Kansas City, 3-0, in the second of four games with the Royals. Sonnanstine (10-3) scattered just five hits, walked one and struck out two for Tampa Bay, which has won six in a row. Sonnanstine has won two straight starts and four consecutive decisions. Akinori Iwamura doubled and drove in two runs for the Rays, who now lead the American League East division by four games over Boston, which lost earlier Saturday to the Yankees. Tampa Bay holds a nine- game lead over New York. Zack Greinke (7-5) took the loss despite a solid start, as he gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings, while striking out seven. Mark Grudzielanek had two hits for the Royals, who went without an extra-base hit. Kansas City has lost two in a row and six of eight.

Final Score: Chicago 6, Oakland 1

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher, Brian Anderson and Alexi Ramirez each homered to back a terrific effort on the mound from Gavin Floyd, as the Chicago White Sox downed the Oakland Athletics, 6-1, in the third meeting of a four-game series. Floyd (10-4) scattered three hits and three walks in 7 1/3 shutout innings for the White Sox, whose pitching staff allowed a season- high 17 hits in a 7-1 loss on Friday. The surprising righty fanned six but couldn't finish off his masterpiece due to a high pitch count. Orlando Cabrera was 2-for-3 with two RBI, as Chicago improved to 8-2 in its last 10 games. Greg Smith (5-7) walked six and was credited with four runs on five hits in five-plus innings of work for Oakland, which has split its last six games. Wes Bankston and Ryan Sweeney accounted for the Athletics' four hits with two apiece, with Sweeney spoiling the shutout bid with a solo homer in the ninth.

Final Score: Texas 5, Baltimore 3

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Ian Kinsler smashed a two-run home run to help the Texas Rangers to a 5-3 win in the middle portion of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Michael Young went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while German Duran was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for the Rangers, who have won four of their last six games. Scott Feldman (3-3) picked up the win for giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over six innings. Nick Markakis hit a two-run double and Brian Burres was tagged for three runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Orioles, who had won three of four coming into the contest. Lance Cormier (1-3) was charged with the loss.

Final Score: Minnesota 9, Cleveland 6

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Brendan Harris, Craig Monroe and Alexi Casilla each knocked in two runs, as the Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians, 9-6, in the middle contest of a three-game set from the Metrodome. Joe Mauer added a solo home run for the Twins, who have won four in a row and are 15-2 in their last 17 games. Kevin Slowey (6-6) was dealt the win as he was touched for five runs on five hits in six innings. Joe Nathan earned his 24th save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Grady Sizemore hit a three-run home run and tripled in five at-bats for the Indians, who have dropped seven straight contests and are 2-10 in their last 12 contests. Tom Mastny (0-2) blew his first save and also absorbed the loss as he was hit for four runs on two hits while recording just one out in the sixth. Starter Aaron Laffey was roughed up for four runs on five hits and four walks over five frames.

Final Score: Toronto 7, LA Angels of Anaheim 5

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Alex Rios went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, while Vernon Wells clubbed a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays staved off a late rally to beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 7-5, in the middle of a three-game set. Roy Halladay (10-6) threw seven innings and yielded just two runs on six hits, while fanning seven and walking just one batter. Halladay has now won seven of his last eight decisions. Adam Lind was responsible for the other RBI for the Blue Jays, who had lost their previous three contests. Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBI for the Angels, who still boast a 4-2 record over their last six showdowns. John Lackey (6-2), who had won his last five starts, took the loss as he was touched for six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in six innings. The six frames is the shortest outing of the season for Lackey.

Final Score: Seattle 3, Detroit 2

MLB Headlines

MLB
Fernando Perez raced home on B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning, giving Tampa Bay a dramatic 9-8 win over the Boston Red Sox to cap a wild Game 2 of the American League Championship Series. A total of seven home runs were hit in the game, tying a postseason record. That included two by Boston's Dustin Pedroia, but in the end, the gritty Rays evened the best-of-seven series. Evan Longoria had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs. Upton also homered off Josh Beckett, as did Cliff Floyd for the Rays. Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay homered for Boston, which went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base. Boston's franchise-record six-game road postseason winning streak came to an end. Mike Timlin (0-1) walked Dioner Navarro to start the bottom of the 11th. Perez then came on as a pinch-runner, and Ben Zobrist drew a walk. Jason Bartlett grounded out to third, but the runners moved up a base and Timlin intentionally walked Akinori Iwamura before Upton lofted a fly ball to short right field. J.D. Drew made the catch, but his throw home was toward the third base line, and Perez was easily safe, ending the 5-hour, 27-minute marathon just after 1:30 a.m. David Price (1-0), the first overall pick in last year's draft, recorded the final two outs of the top of the 11th to get the win. Another key part of the victory was a 3 1/3rd inning performance on the mound by Dan Wheeler, who allowed just one hit and had four strikeouts. The series shifts to Boston for Game 3 Monday afternoon. Matt Garza is the expected starter for the Rays, while Jon Lester gets the ball for the defending World Series champions.
