GASTONIA, N.C. -- Travel clubs entice customers with free vacations and big discounts on travel. But a Gastonia woman paid a fee and later backed out, and couldn't get her money back.Leslie Dixon loves family vacations. She has all of hers on tape. So last March when Dixon got a phone solicitation to join a vacation club with a special sign up offer, she pounced."They were Adirondack Travel Company. They said the whole thing, if I was interested in a travel package, and a free vacation a free weekend. I knew that I wasn't interested, that I would get the free vacation for the family," she said.Dixon paid Adirondack a $320 sign up fee and was told she had 14 days to cancel. Realizing she'd made a bad decision, Dixon cancelled. Adirondack promised a refund."The customer service people kept admitting, 'We'll send you a check. The check's going out on Wednesday. You should get a check,' and I never ever, got the check," she said.Dixon's mistake was giving the company her bank routing number to take money from her checking account as opposed to using a credit card which offers protection. Another mistake was not checking with the better business bureau first. It showed Adirondack Travel with an unsatisfactory record and a pattern of not responding to customers request for refunds.Action 9 sent the company a letter, and also got no response. But a few days later, Dixon got a check for $320.
