What Is A NASCAR Pit Crew And How Many Members Does It Consist Of?

The pit crew in NASCAR is responsible for servicing and making changes to the car during a race. This action occurs during a pit stop. NASCAR rules dictate that only seven members of the pit crew are allowed over the wall at one time. During this stop, the pit crew is responsible for refueling, tire change, mechanical adjustments, and repairs. The stop is done as quickly as possible in order to avoid losing too much position on the race track. Tools are also limited. Per NASCAR, crews can use two impact wrenches, one jack, and two cans of gasoline.

Specific jobs on the pit crew include: The Jackman (raises the car so the tires can be changed), front and rear tire changer, gas man, catch can man (catches fuel overflow), and front and rear tire carrier).

As mentioned earlier, seven members of the pit crew are permitted over the wall during a pit stop. However, an eighth person can be added during the second half of the race. This additional person is restricted in duties and can only perform the following: cleaning the windshield and providing fresh drinking water to the driver.
