When I was little, Saturday mornings were the absolute highlight of my entire week. I'd lie awake in bed on Friday night thinking about pancakes, bacon, eggs and cartoons. My mom was responsible for the majority of that anticipation -- a big breakfast. But the last item, the cartoons, they only came once a week and that was the day.

They answered the big questions in life, such as, what plot would Scooby and those meddling kids foil -- and would they do it with the help of the Harlem Globetrotters? What form-of and shape-of would the Wonder Twins need to help the rest of the Super Friends save the Earth? It was one of those things in life where the payoff lived up to the expectation. Of course it could, they were cartoons, anything was possible.

Cartoonists Drawing On Charlotte For Inspiration

I can now watch those same episodes with my kids whenever I want to -- 24 hours-a-day, on several channels or even On Demand. Too much of a good thing really does diminish its impact. Not that there aren't new cartoons out there. I'm a little ashamed to say that I know exactly who lives in a pineapple under the sea. I may have just caught you singing the answer, as well. But, nothing will ever be the same as waiting all week to be amazed and taken away by those Saturday morning cartoons.

Maybe that's what drew me to this story. Something new, something grassroots, something being done right here in my hometown -- will it bring back the allure? I don't know, but at least the anticipation is back -- I could really go for some pancakes, bacon, and eggs.
