CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Friday night, Harding University High school remembered a football player shot and killed moments after leaving his girlfriend's house Sunday night. Before the game, the school retired Tavis Davis's number, 36, and gave his jersey to his mother.Friday night, each player released a balloon in his honor. Most Harding fans also wore ribbons and t-shirts in Davis's honor.Harding University High School Assistant Football Coach Masanori Toguchi led the way into the team's locker room earlier Friday, to locker number 35 – the one Travis Davis left behind."It was hard enough opening the locker. We are going to give his mom the helmet," Toguchi said.Toguchi was more than a coach to 18-year-old Davis. He was the one who helped the teen stay on track in school. He was the one Davis' mother called when she realized he was missing Sunday night. That evening the high school football player and wrestler was shot to death near Parkway Avenue where he was waiting for the bus home from his girlfriend's house in West Charlotte. On Wednesday police arrested A.J. McMullen, 17, and charged him with murder. Officers said they do not believe the shooting was random, but they have not revealed a possible motive.Police say the case is still open and it's possible they may make more arrests.
