Police Looking Into Graffiti At Derita Playground
Friday, November 3, 2006
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Neighbors in north Charlotte worry a playground has become a gang battleground. They're finding graffiti at the playground in the Fairstone neighborhood park. Some graffiti is even on the sides of nearby houses. The tagging has references to New Orleans. Neighbors believe the problem is between teens who relocated to the area after Hurricane Katrina and other Charlotte teens.Cindy Wallace lives nearby."I have noticed kids in the park at school hours when I think they should be in school. They're not in school, so there's definitely something going on," she said.Police say they're looking into the tagging but they haven't found any evidence of gangs in the Derita community. They're also working with the city's gang unit to see if there are any gangs in Charlotte with ties to New Orleans.
