Mecklenburg BOE Asks State For Revote In District 100 Race

Some voters in Mecklenburg County may have to head to the polls again. The Mecklenburg County Board of Elections has decided to ask for a revote in a major race.

The race between State House Speaker Jim Black and his Republican opponent Hal Jordan was almost too close to call after the Nov. 7 elections. Black led by just seven votes at the end of the day.

Now the candidates will have to wait even longer to find out who will go to Raleigh.

County board of election officials found out about a huge error Monday night as they were reviewing all the votes. They discovered hundreds of voters who went to McClintock Middle School to cast their ballots were able to vote in the Black/Jordan race, even though they shouldn't have.

Officials said 552 ballots were cast at the polling place. Of those ballots, 105 were correctly cast in the race, while 446 people voted in that race erroneously.

Board members said the blunder happened because poll officials failed to find out what district in which the voters were supposed to vote. The school served as the polling place for both State House District 100 and State House District 104 voters.

The board is now recommending a revote to the state board of elections.

Michael Dickerson, director of the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, said the problem has resulted from an innocent mistake. He said the poll workers are only called on twice a year to handle a complicated process.

"These are outstanding people, most every one," he said. "99 percent of them did just great. It's just this one here that failed."

The state board of elections can authorize a revote and will then decide whether the voting will be redone in just that precinct or will be done district wide.

But Black's attorney said he's against a revote. He's hoping for an easier solution.

"If all ballots from McClintock Middle School in the District 100 race were removed, the total would greatly favor Speaker Black," he said.

The extra delay is just one more thing in the way of Jordan's quest for a seat in the General Assembly.

"You get put in suspended animation for a week and a half," he said.

Jordan is hoping for a revote.
