Court Records: Man May Have Purposely Caused Double-Fatal Crash In Cabarrus County

Posted: 5:52 pm EDT March 14, 2007Updated: 6:29 pm EDT March 14, 2007

A deadly traffic accident in Cabarrus County may not have been an accident after all.

Eyewitness News uncovered new information which suggests the wreck may have been a botched suicide attempt. An ex-girlfriend of the man charged in the crash, 25-year-old Gary Metheny, told state troopers she was on the phone with him until he crashed.

According to court records, the woman says the two were arguing about children they have together and about another man in her life. She says he vowed to drive "his car through her house at 80 miles an hour and kill her and their children." She says he then told her he was going to kill himself, and his last words before the crash were, "Are you ready? Here it goes." Then she heard the impact.

Metheny survived the Sapp Road crash Sunday night, but the two people in the vehicle he hit -- Mary Ann and Terry Sifford -- died.

Corey Cochran, the principal at Mount Pleasant Elementary School in Cabarrus County, said Mary Ann Sifford worked at the school as a receptionist for about 20 years. He said the accident is just tragic.

"Regardless of how it happened, we're just sad Mrs. Sifford's gone and we're really going to miss her around here," he said.

Metheny is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and driving while impaired. Investigators say he failed drug and alcohol tests. They also say he admitted he was in no condition to drive.

This is not Metheny's first brush with the law. He was convicted in 2000 on assault, breaking and entering and drug charges.
