CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hundreds of white balloons filled the sky on Monday afternoon as hundreds of students said goodbye on the ground to 12-year-old Shay Brown.

Brown was accidentally shot and killed May 5 in west Charlotte. Family and friends gathered with classmates for a memorial service at Sugar Creek Charter School, which his twin brother, Bray Brown, attends.

“He liked eating macaroni a lot and his favorite words were, 'And if I don't?' You could be like, 'Shay, take out the trash,' and he'd say 'And if I don't?’” Brown said.

Teachers said they miss the boy dearly.

“Wish I would have held you a little tighter for a little longer,” one teacher said.

Brown was remembered as a fun-loving boy who was very popular at school.

It was his grandmother, Annie Brown, who raised him and his brother.

“He was a hardworking little boy. He was a smart child. He always had a smile,” she said.

Sugar Creek Charter School is creating a bronze plaque to remember the 12-year-old who wanted to be a police officer. Shay Brown's father says his son will never be forgotten.

“There's no words I can say to bring him back, but my child will be missed, truly missed,” Tony Brown said.

Police say no one has been charged in the shooting. They're waiting on lab results, which could take four to six weeks, before presenting the case to the district attorney.

Right now it's grieving time for Shay Brown's family.
