CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Friday's high temperatures forced officials at the Mecklenburg County Health Department to remind people about the dangers of extreme heat.

"Anytime it gets this hot, folks should be careful," said health department spokesman Rick Christenbury.

He recommends people, especially the very young and very old, stay hydrated and avoid extensive exposure to the heat.

The principal at Highland Mill Montessori Elementary School made sure that warning was heeded on the last day of school.

“When you’re done, they can run through the sprinklers so they can cool off. Is that good girls?” Principal Terry Cummings said to some students speaking with Eyewitness News.

Cummings made a few changes for the day’s festivities.

"We had to pull out the hoses, and also set up two water stations rather than one," Cummings said.

Parent Joseph Hall says he's already planning to keep his son cool this summer.

"We're only going to allow him to play for a short period of time when he's out there in the heat," he said.

Experts say that’s good advice for everyone to follow.
