CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A police document paints a picture of the man accused of driving drunk and hitting and killing a man in Cornelius over the weekend as he learned about the charges that could change his life forever.Authorities say Michael Petrone struck 22-year-old Patrick Gay and never stopped. He’s now in the Mecklenburg County jail facing murder charges.Officers didn’t find Petrone until almost 10 hours after the accident. Statements from the first officer to talk to Petrone detail the events that led up to the crash and what might be considered a confession.According to the document, Petrone told police he’d worked a double shift on Saturday at Midtown Sundries restaurant in Cornelius, and then stopped at a bar to have a snack and a drink on the way home. But he told officers that he only vaguely remembers what happened on the way home.Petrone said, according to police, he “remembers hitting something. He remembers the windshield shattering.” He told police he drove home, then “he looked at the car and went upstairs and went to bed.” When the officer told Petrone about Gay’s death, he says Petrone sat down on the curb, then “placing his head into his heads and started shaking his head left to right. I asked Michael if he needed to tell me something. His response was, ‘I did it.’”After that the officer says Petrone took off his glasses and appeared to tear up.Although it was 10 hours after the accident, the two officers who spoke with Petrone noted they could smell alcohol on his breath.RELATED: N.C.
