Former CMS Teacher Turns Herself In On Sex Charges

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher was arrested Wednesday afternoon on sex charges.Amanda Marie Athey of Harrisburg had resigned less than 24 hours earlier amid the allegations she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student from Cornelius. The 27-year-old teacher taught ninth-grade English at Hopewell High School in Huntersville.Athey turned herself in at the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office around 2 p.m. after four warrants were issued for her arrest. She’s charged with three counts of indecent liberties between a teacher and a student and one count of sexual activity between a teacher and a student.A search warrant states an investigation began after the student’s father became suspicious and started recording his 16-year-old's phone calls. He told police he heard his daughter and the teacher talking about their sexual relationship.Authorities took a phone, a computer, some poems and some pictures of the alleged victim from the teacher’s home, according to the search warrant. They said that evidence, along with interviews, led to the arrest.CMS, Cornelius police and the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office all participated in the investigation. CMS put Athey on paid leave during that time.Athey was released on $4,000 secured bond. She will appear in court on Thursday.The N.C.
