Illegal Immigrants Worried After Charlotte-Area Roundup, Deportations

Immigration and Customs agents raided several Charlotte-area apartment complexes last week, resulting in 74 arrests and, subsequently, 74 deportations.

The roundup has many illegal immigrants on edge.

"These are hard-working people that only want to work," said Angela Feliciano after dozens of her neighbors were arrested. "A lot of us are scared. Many neighbors are afraid to leave their homes; they say, 'They're not going to catch me.'"

Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory has a different opinion of the situation.

“We need to deal with them immediately and deport them,” he said. "A lot of these people may be good, hard-working people, but the fact of the matter is they've broken the law.”

He said illegal immigrants, regardless of their work status, hurt Charlotte in countless ways.

ICE officials said the raids were planned months in advance and will continue.
