Police: One Killed, One Injured In Robbery Gone Bad

Investigators Search For Suspects In Fatal Home Invasion

Saturday, August 25, 2007 – updated: 8:20 pm EDT August 25, 2007

Police said that just before midnight on Friday, several suspects forced their way into a Morganton home and shot two men, killing one of them.

According to Investigator David Curry with the Morganton Department of Public Safety, two, possibly three suspects forced their way into a home at 127 Jones Street in Morganton at 11:58 p.m. Friday and shot two men that lived at the home.

Police said that the suspects entered the home and one of the victims jumped up to defend himself, creating a struggle.

Sometime either during the struggle or right after, police said Pedro Ramirez was shot and killed. Manual Vargas was also shot. Vargas was taken to Grace Hospital and later transferred to Carolinas Medical Center for surgery. No condition was available at the time of this report.

Investigators were back out in the neighborhood Saturday afternoon, interviewing witnesses and gathering details since many of the witnesses were afraid to talk on Friday night after the shooting, Curry said.

Police are looking for a tall and thin black male who was armed with a rifle. Witnesses told police that another suspect is a thin white male with dirty blond hair who was carrying a pistol. Police are also investigating if a third suspect was involved.

At this point in the investigation police do not know if the suspects and the victims knew each other.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects is asked to call Morganton Crimestoppers at 828-437-3333.
