KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Officials in Cleveland County have issued a warrant for Jeanette Goforth. They said she filed a false police report Saturday night, claiming that her car was stolen, and that her 5-month-old child was inside the vehicle when it was taken.

Goforth orginally reported the car was stolen from the Kings Mountain Travel Plaza on Dixon School Road around 11:45 p.m., and that her child had been kidnapped.

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office immediately issued an Amber Alert for the child.

Throughout the course of the investigation it was discovered that the child was safe, and had not been inside the vehicle at the time of the car theft.

The Amber Alert was cancelled. Authorities have now issued a warrant for Ms. Jeanette Michelle Goforth for filing a false police report.

Investigators haven't released a motive in this case.

Several agencies assisted the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office in the Amber Alert, including the Kings Mountain and Shelby Police Departments, and the North and South Carolina Highway Patrols.

You may remember back in November 2006, when Sherry Mullins, 36, of Morganton was charged with filing a false police report. Mullins originally told police she and her 7-year-old son were kidnapped and taken to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she was then raped several times. Mullins later admitted to investigators that she lied. In that case we learned that filing a false police report in North Carolina is only a misdemeanor.
