CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A medical examiner determined that a teenager shot by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police died from a single bullet wound to his back. A report released Monday said 16-year-old Laquan Hykeem Davon Brown died Nov. 4 when the bullet entered his lower back, moved into his abdomen and chest, and damaged several major organs – his kidney, stomach, liver and heart. How the autopsy report plays into the police investigation is unclear. In the days after his death, Brown’s mother publicly questioned what had happened, and now the medical examiner’s report raises more questions. They are questions that police aren’t answering just yet. Authorities said they are waiting on lab results that could explain more completely how the shooting happened. According to authorities, on Nov. 4 police officers Brian Carey and Jeffrey Wheaton were responding to an early morning robbery call at an east Charlotte apartment complex when they saw Brown and he began running. Police said Brown had a gun, and when he raised his hand, an officer fired his weapon twice. Police said they recovered a gun about 20 feet from Brown's body. Investigators have not said who the gun belonged to.Scott MacLatchie, a local attorney and expert in police shootings, said the situation is complicated.“Very frequently police shootings, because they’re dynamic situations – the suspects are usually running,” he said.MacLatchie said Brown may have turned his back in the moment before Wheaton pulled the trigger, and the autopsy report is just part of the picture that investigators, and perhaps even jurors, would consider.“What I think they'll be looking at, though, is what the officers involved and witnesses described as the suspect's movement at the time the shots were fired,” he said. Brown had two pending charges and a warrant out for his arrest when he was shot. His family said the teen, who lived in west Charlotte, was visiting a friend at the apartment complex that night. Both officers were placed on administrative leave until a review board determined they had followed procedure.
