Fire Marshal Calls Alleged Lenoir Swingers Club A Death Trap

Thursday, February 14, 2008 – updated: 9:20 am EST February 15, 2008

A suspected swingers club in Lenoir may be shut down for some time after the building that houses it failed a fire inspection on 24 violations.

Firefighters served a “stop occupancy” order on the building Thursday afternoon. They said the violations spanned everything from faulty lighting to a requirement for a sprinkler system. The building cannot be used until a sprinkler system is installed, firefighters said.

"It’s a death trap to the people that go in there and to firefighters that have to go in to make a rescue or anything," said Fire Marshal Roger Barlow. "There are two hot tubs on the second floor and that is what is blocking the front exit. They have went from the second floor and built platforms and put two hot tubs there."

Firefighters said in addition to hot tubs there are also a dozen rooms with mattresses and dancing poles. The city is looking into whether or not an adult-themed swingers club planned to operate in the building, and whether it would fall under the adult business ordinance.

Residents have already complained about the location of the club because the building is across the street from a church and next door to a nonprofit that teaches teens about safe sex. If the club is deemed an adult business, its distance from the church would put it in violation of city ordinances.

The city of Lenoir plans to release its findings on the club on Friday.
