LENOIR, N.C. -- The city of Lenoir has banned an alleged swingers club from operating in its current location.Earlier this week residents raised concerns about the Ashe Avenue building’s proximity to several churches. City officials decided to look into whether the club would be considered an adult business, which would restrict where it can operate. As the city investigated, the fire marshal shut the building down on Thursday because of a number of fire code violations. Then the Western Carolina Friends club, which is believed to cater to adults who participate in a certain type of sexual activity, was dealt another blow when the city determined on Friday it did indeed meet the definition of an adult business, the Lenoir city manager said.City Manager Lane Bailey said city ordinances strictly forbid adult businesses from operating near churches, so even when the building meets fire codes, the club still cannot operate there.City workers posted “notice of violation” signs across the property Friday afternoon stating the club must cease activities immediately or be fined $50 a day. A member of the church across the street saw the notice and shouted, “Hallelujah!”The Lenoir Zoning Department has released 60 photos taken inside the building during the city’s investigation, which appear to support its claim that an adult business was running inside. They show hot tubs, dancing poles, 18 rooms with beds and game set-ups. Based on information from the club’s Web site, officials said they believe a poker table was used for strip poker and a Twister mat was used for naked Twister.Eyewitness News tried to contact the person who leases the building but he did not return phone calls. He can appeal the city's decision.IMAGES: Photos Taken Inside Swingers Club In Lenoir RELATED STORY: Fire Marshal Calls Alleged Lenoir Swingers Club A Death Trap RELATED STORY: Swingers Club In Lenior Meets Resistance
