CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Authorities took a dozen people into custody early Wednesday after a Special Weapons and Tactics team served a warrant on a known gang member and gunfire erupted, police said.About 5:30 a.m., a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department SWAT team went to serve a felony arrest warrant on forged vehicle title and fraud charges on a member of the MS-13 gang at a home on Langston Mill Road in north Charlotte, said CMPD spokeswoman Julie Hill. Officers entered the home and found the suspect on the second floor. As officers tried to take the man into custody, his brother began shooting at police, Hill said. At least one SWAT officer returned fire, shooting the brother twice. His injuries are not life-threatening but he was taken to the hospital for treatment. None of the officers were hurt.Police, however, said the shots did come extremely close. A rogue bullet even hit a home next door during the shootout.Neighbors said the whole morning was upsetting and frightening.“We heard three to four gun shots,” said Ernest Amaranto. “When I woke up all the cops were here taking guys into custody.”Neighbors said two girls live in the home where the shootout happened.“The two girls were crying. It’s got to be scary for them,” Amaranto said.He said he’s glad the possible danger in his neighborhood is gone.“To tell you the truth, I'm happy they take (the suspected gang members) away. I have three children. I don't like this stuff here,” he said.In all, 12 people from two homes on the street were taken into police custody after the shootout, including the man who was shot. Police have not commented on their possible gang affiliations. The Department of Motor Vehicles and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were also involved in the arrests. The man who police went to serve the warrant on is from El Salvador and is in the country illegally, authorities said.Police are still investigating. They towed away a pickup truck and climbed on ladders to look at the roof of the home and a neighboring home late Wednesday. The names of those arrested have not been released.
