MONROE, N.C. -- An Indian Trail man ran over and killed his girlfriend in a Monroe parking lot early Monday morning, police said.

Authorities said the couple was arguing in a minivan so the driver, 49-year-old Vernon Closser IV, pulled over at Trans World Satellite on West Roosevelt Boulevard. Monroe police said Closser accidentally put the car in reverse as the woman, 23-year-old Debra Laney of Marshville, tried to get out of the vehicle.

Investigators said Laney slipped as she was exiting the vehicle and landed on the ground, and then the minivan rolled over her. Officers were called to the scene and found Laney dead in the parking lot just before 2:15 a.m.

Closser has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. He is out of jail on $10,000 unsecured bond.
