SALISBURY, N.C. -- While a tidy orange fence now contains the charred debris of the Salisbury Millwork Company, federal experts have released their preliminary findings about the fire that killed two firefighters one week ago.ATF spokesperson, Earl Woodham says it began in the void space between the basement ceiling and the first floor office although he would not release the exact cause.“Absolutely the fire investigators are very confident and we know what caused that fire. Are we willing to come out into public and say it and then prove our point in court? Right now, no,” Woodham said. The ATF will only say there were a lot of lights and wires in the space where the fire started, but there was no criminal activity and have ruled out arson.“This was an abnormal fire. The superheated air, in combination with the smoke created a very, very fast moving fire that could simply outrun a human being and if you don't think that's the truth, you don't know much about fires in confined spaces,” Woodham said. Now the City of Salisbury is asking that a panel of fire experts look into the policy and procedures of the Salisbury Fire Department and exactly what happened on the day Justin Monroe and Victor Isler died.Eyewitness News asked the same question of Salisbury Police Chief Bob Parnell. “I've got to say I know that the firefighters of Salisbury did exactly what they were supposed to do,” Parnell responded. The chief says it is not uncommon for a review panel to be created in cases like this, and he welcomes the findings.
