Witness Says Teen Killed In Indian Trail Shooting Was A Hero

Posted: 5:07 pm EDT April 7, 2008Updated: 5:29 pm EDT April 7, 2008

Bullet holes dot the inside of a mobile home on Rosetta Drive in Indian Trail, each one marked by letters that seem to haunt friends of 15-year-old Jonathan Russell.

They said the teen was standing right in front of the hole marked "H" when he was fatally wounded.

"He didn't have a chance. He didn't have a chance," repeated Tamara Hartis, who spoke with tears in her eyes and a bandage covering the wound from a bullet that grazed her head. "I was doing CPR on Jonathan, trying, trying. I did the best I could. I tried."

But the teen, who Hartis said was like her own son, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Union County sheriff's office investigators said they believe the shooting was not a random act. However, they have not given any motive for shooting at the home which had at least six people, including a 2-year-old boy, inside. They said Russell was at Hartis’s home visiting her son and other friends.

Hartis said at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday she heard a faint knock at the door. She said there was a man there who grunted at her and walked away. She said that's when she heard the gunfire from at least two assault-style rifles.

"It was fast," she said, "And all I could do was hit the floor and scream, ‘Everybody get down.’"

She said she ducked behind a refrigerator and wanted to go to the young men and boys on the other side of the door but couldn't because of the gunfire between them. She said she saw Russell get hit by a shot and work to save the 2-year-old beside him.

"He was grabbing the baby and bringing the baby down with him. He managed to throw him on the other side of the couch, kept him out of harm's way," she said.

She called Russell a life-saver.

On Monday counselors were called to Sun Valley Middle School to help the teen’s classmates, who just learned about the shooting. A Union County Schools official said a letter will be sent home with every student that has a class with Russell. School leaders want parents to know that counseling will be provided again Tuesday. They also wanted to make sure students understood it was Jonathan Lee Russell who was killed, not another Jonathan Russell who is in the sixth grade.

Union County investigators are asking for help solving the crime. They said they believe four black males were involved in the shooting. The men were driving a white Nissan Altima, anywhere from a 1995 to ‘97 model. Authorities said if you know anything about the shooting, call Crime Stoppers at (704) 283-5600.
