CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Plan to pay more for water and sewer. The Charlotte City Council approved Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department's request to boost your bill 15 percent. That will cost the average family about $6 more each month.Water officials said the public conserved so well, they're losing money, so they need the rate hike to pay their bills.Director Doug Bean told the council, "We're back up to a $20 million deficit."Some customers feel they're being punished for doing what they were asked."It's ridiculous," Linda Springs said.Others understand."[CMUD has] to keep the water coming, and if they [have] got to keep it coming, they [have] got to have all that machinery and stuff to do that," Billy Hardin said. The new rate kicks in May 1. It drops slightly July 1.For the very latest on drought information in your area, including restrictions and rain totals, check out our drought conditions page.
