N.C. Troopers: Watch Out, Aggressive Drivers

Posted: 5:28 am EDT April 25, 2008Updated: 6:18 am EDT April 25, 2008

State troopers will target aggressive drivers Friday, using new technology to help nab them.

During the operation, troopers will crack down on reckless driving, unsafe lane changes, following too closely and impaired driving. The aggressive driving operation will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. About a dozen troopers and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers will participate.

To catch speeders, specially trained troopers will use the lidar, or laser technology. Unlike radar, lidar can pinpoint a specific car or truck and lock in the speed.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Interstate 77 is the deadliest stretch of highway in the Charlotte area because of high numbers of cars and tractor-trailers. Troopers said in more than half of collisions involving commercial trucks, the drivers in the regular vehicles are the cause.

Sgt. Darren Conrad of the North Carolina highway patrol said Friday’s operation will hopefully save lives.

"With a vehicle that can weigh anywhere from 50,000 to 80,000 pounds, those type of vehicles can't just stop on a dime, even on a dry surface. So we try to target those type of violations that can absolutely save lives and reduce collisions on our interstate,” Conrad said.

Conrad said having the trooper presence will make drivers be more aware and cautious on the roads.

"Just the mere presence of a law enforcement vehicle on the right shoulder, left shoulder of the highway, with blue lights turning, in itself, absolutely slows folks down,” he said.

The operation will focus on both commercial and regular drivers.
