Tractor Trailer, SUV Collide At Confusing Intersection, Killing 1

Posted: 7:36 am EDT April 25, 2008Updated: 6:48 pm EDT April 25, 2008

Investigators are looking into a north Charlotte intersection after a deadly crash early Friday.

Just before 6 a.m., a tractor trailer going north from Reames Road onto Metromont Industrial Boulevard, just north of W.T. Harris Boulevard, slammed into the driver’s side of a Jeep Cherokee heading south on Reames Road.

The Jeep’s driver, 54-year-old Steven Hance, was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. The truck driver, 28-year-old Quinterrius Cobb, was not hurt.

Drivers told Eyewitness News the intersection can be very confusing because it has no stop signs and the pavement markings have faded.

“You really don’t know what the other drivers are going to do, so it’s always kind of a dicey situation,” said motorist Bob Youngblood.

Police, however, said they have seen few accidents there.

Authorities have not said who was at fault in the crash. Police said they will leave it up to the district attorney’s office to determine whether the truck driver should be charged.

As is standard procedure with all fatal wrecks, investigators with the North Carolina Department of Transportation are evaluating the intersection to determine if something could be done to make it safer.

Request A Traffic Light, Turn Signal

If you think you need a traffic light or turn signal near your home, there is a process you need to go through.

First, find out if the road is maintained by the state or the city. Then contact the department of transportation office to file a complaint.

You should have other supporters who agree the road is a problem, and have specific information about why you’re concerned.

The engineers will do a study to see if a change is needed there.
