Man Goes Airborne, Causes Power Outage During Chase

Sunday, April 27, 2008 – updated: 7:22 am EDT April 27, 2008

A man is in critical condition after police said he led them on a high-speed chase through Claremont early Saturday morning.

Our newspaper partner, the Hickory Daily Record, said 37-year-old Eric Williams reached speeds of up to 110 miles per hour during the chase and even went airborne a couple of times.

Police said they followed Williams after they say he had to lock his brakes to stop.

The vehicle went airborne when Williams sped over railroad tracks on South Depot Street. The chase ended on Bethany Church Road when the car went airborne again for about 202 feet, hitting a utility pole. Police said the car continued another 362 feet, rolling before coming to rest in a field.

Officers found Williams lying unconscious beside the car.

Duke Power responded to the crash along with emergency crews to handle power outages resulting from the pole being struck.

According to the incident report, Williams will have to undergo surgery.

Police said Williams is charged with reckless driving and felony speeding to elude arrest.

Police said the Highway Patrol is handling the rest of the investigation and will decide whether to charge Williams with driving while impaired at a later date.
