CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- You will soon see new all terrain vehicles in a neighborhood near you if you live in East Charlotte.“As long as there's a place to go, these will go," said Charlotte Mecklenburg police Officer Brian Sanders. He's talking about the new two-man all terrain vehicles or ATVs they'll be using to patrol the Hickory Grove Division.Sanders and his partner, Officer Jeff Bumgarner, came up with the idea of the ATVs when looking at different ways to crack down on crime, particularly in the division's two hotspots."We're getting from business, to complex to another area very, very quickly. Much, much faster than a bike or car could, because we're so small and mobile but we're big enough to see," he said.Police said the hotbeds of crime in the Albemarle-Farm Pond area and off W.T. Harris and Rosecroft Drive are made up mostly of apartment complexes. Statistics show almost 28 percent of the division's violent crime and more than 19 percent of all their property crimes occur in these two areas.Officer Sanders also said, "It allows us to get out with suspicious people. It allows us to actually answer calls."Calls they said will take them any and everywhere, especially in wooded areas."With these, we can respond through areas that even a bicycle could not. We're not limited to the pavement. I'm not saying a bike is, but we're not limited really to anything," he said. That unlimited access has neighbors like Lyonel Anthony looking forward to seeing the ATVs."Half the time police can't really see things sitting in a car so ATVs is perfect. Just think if my mom's house to be broken into I would want something like that in her neighborhood," said James. These ATVs will not cost taxpayers any money.CMPD said they're getting them through a law loan program. They are getting them from Matthews Fun Machines, a Yamaha dealership that will provide them with new ones every couple of years.
