CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Songs and tears filled the heart of UNC Charlotte's campus as students, teachers, and family remembered murdered student Irina "Ira" Yarmolenko. Her brother traveled from Chapel Hill, the family's home."The person who killed my sister is in some ways a byproduct of the system we live in. We have to do something to change it," said Pavel Yarmolenko. The 20-year old was last seen Monday at Jackson's Java Coffeehouse, across from the campus on University City Boulevard. She left there about 10:50 in the morning, and her body was found two-and-a-half hours later on the banks of the Catawba River in Gaston County. Police confirmed Yarmolenko was killed by asphyxiation.Detectives were on hand at the vigil Thursday night questioning close friends about her death. Meanwhile, students told stories of a sophomore known for her huge heart and always offering a helping hand."I can't imagine anyone would want to even think about harming her, so i can't picture her being in that kind of scenario," said Sean Barrett."Ira was the sweetest person I've ever know in my life and we're all lucky to have known her. We're going to miss her so much," said Maggie Cunningham.
