Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders said they have no plans to expand a trial extended day program to other elementary schools, just yet.

Billingsville Elementary School has had an extra hour of class time all year long.

It's the first year of the program, which is intended to raise test scores at the struggling school.

  • SURVEY: Should Students Spend An Extra Hour In School Each Day?

  • In its first year, the extended day has had its problems, from lack of planning time to tired students.

Billingsville will continue to have extended days next year, but no other school will implement the extended day next school year.

First, it's costly and hasn't been included in the school system’s budget. Teachers are paid about $500 extra a month for the extra hour.

District leaders are also waiting to see if test scores improve. They want to make sure the extra hour is worth the time and money before other schools start having longer days.
