GASTONIA, N.C. -- A stunned Lee Ann Bell shook her head and stared in a distance Monday morning as she talked about the naked registered sex offender that Gastonia police say was peeping into her home Sunday night. "You just don't know who's around," she said. She said she had no idea that Derrick Keener, 47, was in her neighborhood.Bell was home with her two young girls and her boyfriend when she cracked the windows and opened the door to let air in on the warm Sunday night."My doors were open. My windows were open. He could have walked right in," she said. Investigators said they believe Keener, who has a history of exposing himself and crimes against children, was a threat to abduct or kidnap someone.Keener has been convicted of indecent exposure at least seven times since 1982. In 1997, he was convicted of criminal sex conduct with a 10-year-old child and attempting a lewd act on a child. On Friday night, he was arrested after a woman said he pulled up next to her on Interstate 85 and committed a lewd act so that she could see him. Then Sunday night, Angela Paysour, who lives just down the street from Bell, said she saw Keener walking down the street without a stitch of clothes on. She was talking with her husband when she noticed him."We kind of started realizing what was going on after we saw him go to three different houses," she said. She called 911. Police found Keener in his pickup truck with a pair of shorts on backward. Officers shocked him with a Taser eight times when he refused to comply with their demands, police said. When Paysour heard about Keener's history on Monday, she said, "That makes me mad because we have five kids here."Another neighbor said she is certain she saw Keener in front of her home about a month ago. She said the man was committing a lewd act on himself where everyone could see. She tried to take video with her camera phone, but she said before she could get set, the man got up and left in a pickup truck the same color as the truck Keener drove Sunday night.Keener lives with his parents on Anthony Drive. The house is not far from Forest Heights Elementary School. Sheriff's officials said he lives a lawful distance away. His neighbor Wade Leaphart said Keener has always been prone to expose himself, but he never scared him or his wife.“He seems normal enough. I guess he just can't help himself. The worst comes out in him sometimes," Leaphart said.Monday afternoon Judge Ralph Gingles increased Keener’s bond from $5,000 to $250,000. He will be considered for GPS monitoring if he manages to make bond.
