CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Country Hearth Inn on Equipment Drive in North Charlotte is expected to be back open Wednesday morning after a clerk was shot and killed Monday night.Police said 63-year-old Larry Broughton was killed and another worker, Manjula Patel, critically injured.Broughton's daughter, Tonya, did not want us to tell you her last name, but said she still can't believe what happened. "I'm totally in shock and still haven't accepted the fact yet," she said.It will take time as police have not released a motive behind the shootings. Police said two men were buzzed into the motel Monday night. They were apparently looking to rent a room. A short time later, police said one of the men suddenly pulled out a gun and started shooting.Eyewitness News checked with police who said there were about 60 calls for service at the Inn over the past three months. Most were for disturbances or drug possession.Tonya said she knew the Inn's history but never thought something like this would happen."That hotel has had some issues. And I just didn't ever know it was really this bad but I know now," she said. She also said her father was retired and only worked at the Inn part time a few nights a week. His first priority was his family. "He and my mom baby-sat my children."My 2-year-old was his life. And now he's gone," said Tonya.Motel guests also said Broughton was a jovial man who didn’t deserve what happened to him. One woman, who didn’t want her identity revealed, said she could hear the gunshots from her room.“We heard two or three loud bangs. It sounded like a door slamming real hard at first, and then I thought, maybe gunshots,” she said. The motel's general manager is offering a $10,000 reward for the capture of the men. He has released surveillance tape from the robbery and is asking anyone who recognizes the men to call police.Investigators are also reviewing the tape to try to identify the men. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
