CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A-5-year-old girl is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Centger after being struck by a Charlotte Mecklenburg School bus Monday evening."She was already across the street, the bus just honked the horn and just didn't stop and hit her," said Mel Chancely, who was playing outside with friends when the accident happened. His sister, Shaloma Chancely added, "Her brother and all them was coming. People got out of their cars and just started trying to help her." Police said the bus driver was making a left turn in Aventide Lane in Northeast Charlotte when the young girl was struck while riding her bike. The girl, whose name has not been released, is a CMS student and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. CMS officials said the bus was coming from Chantilly Montessori School and had only one child on the bus, but neither the driver nor that child was hurt.Other eyewitnesses like Mouminy Kaba said even though the girl was wedged under the bus she was still conscious. "She could still move and everything, but she didn't move that fast. Like they tell her to move and she would move a part. She was crying really badly," he recalled.LaQuandra Jones added, "I haven't seen us do much together but the love that they show toward the children, the bus driver, towards the child was remarkable."CMS said the bus driver has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. They also said the driver, whose name their not releasing at this time, will also have to take a drug test, which is standard protocol.Police added no charges have been filed because their investigation is ongoing.
