Chester County Family Fears For Children After Goats Killed

POSTED: 5:27 pm EDT May 16, 2008
UPDATED: 6:04 pm EDT May 16, 2008

Nearly a dozen goats found slaughtered has a local woman concerned about a pack of wild dogs roaming the area.

She said she worries they could attack a child.

"It takes less than five seconds and a life can be destroyed," said Chester County livestock owner Nova Grant.

Grant said a pack of dogs tore open her wire fence this week and killed 11 of her goats.

"They don't eat them," she said. "They take them by the throat, and when they stop kicking, they move on."

The goats cost Grant $2,000. The five that weren't killed are bloodied and scared. Several of them are refusing to eat.

Grant's young children often feed them, but now she's afraid of an attack.

"If they're out here, and we're inside, busy, it could happen," she said.

Todd Campbell of South Carolina Wildlife said it would be better if it was coyotes or foxes instead of wild dogs.

"Domestic dogs that get wild and join a pack are more dangerous than anything we have out in the wild," he said. "They'll kill just to kill. They get a taste for blood and they're used to being around humans -- that's not a good thing."

Campbell said because the goats are not being eaten, wild dogs and not coyotes are the likely culprits. He said when people get tired of their dogs and let them go, they often join a pack and become destructive.

Chester County Animal Control has set traps on Grant's property, hoping to catch a few dogs and break up the pack. Grant said she knows there isn't much more they can do.

"We'd like more traps, and we'd like them out here with guns, but there's only so much you can do in a county," she said.

Grant took three other goats to her home to keep them safe. Buying and selling livestock is her family business, but she said it will be some time before she buys any more animals. There's just too much hurt, she said.

"They're our pets," she said. "We named them all. It's very upsetting."
