UPDATED: 12:12 am EDT May 18, 2008

Gastonia police said a mother left her newborn infant in the trunk of her car. Officers discovered the baby in the parking lot of a Gastonia healthcare office, on East Garrison Boulevard, around 3:00 a.m. Saturday.

They estimate the woman gave birth, in Charlotte, around noon Friday. Officers said the mother kept her appointment at the Gastonia center but was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital upon examination. Police said the woman told doctors at Gaston Memorial Hospital that she had left the infant in a box at a Huntersville hospital. Police said after more questioning, the woman finally told them her baby was inside her car parked in Gastonia.

Officers said they are still investigating. They haven't named or charged the woman. The infant is recovering at Gaston Memorial Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
