CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police will turn over evidence to the state in a deadly police-involved shooting.Almost two weeks ago, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot and killed a 21-year-old man in a North Charlotte neighborhood.Aaron Winchester died after two bullets hit him in the back on May 20.His father, Ronald Winchester, told Eyewitness News he is glad to learn the State Bureau Investigation will be conducting an independent investigation.“I just didn't think that CMPD was handling it right. So I'm just pleased to know that it's going to be done right,” said Winchester.Police said veteran Officer David Jester responded to a domestic assault call on Sylvania Avenue two weeks ago where the shooting happened. The officer told police he only fired after Winchester refused several commands, tried to run away, and then drew a gun from his back pocket, and turned back toward the officer. But several witnesses said they did not see Winchester reach for a gun.“I know that it's going to be taking care of properly. That's just the benefit of it all that they can't lie. It's too many witnesses that are saying that it didn't happen the way they say it happened,” Winchester said.A new North Carolina law that went into effect last fall allows the family of a shooting victim to request the SBI be involved. While CMPD normally conducts its own investigation, interim police chief David Graham said they are cooperating fully with the SBI.Graham said in a statement: "Mr. Winchester's family told us they wanted an independent SBI investigation and we are working with the Bureau to ensure all pertinent records and evidence are provided to them in a way that maintains chain-of-custody integrity."RELATED STORY: Father Of Man Shot To Death By Police Plans To Ask SBI To Investigate RELATED STORY: Witnesses Want Thorough Investigation Into Officer-Involved Shooting RELATED STORY: Identities Released In Fatal Police Shooting In Charlotte
