Creek Water Level Rises, Traps Workers In Building

Posted: 11:52 pm EDT June 21, 2008Updated: 1:31 pm EDT June 22, 2008

The water level in a local creek rose so high it trapped five men inside a building Saturday night. Rescue teams were called to the building off North Tryon and Atando Avenue. That's where flood-waters trapped five men. Rescue teams had to use an inflatable raft to bring them to safety.

The creek was the derita branch of the Little Sugar Creek.

Several cars outside the building leaked gasoline and other chemicals into the water, but no one was hurt. Many people received reverse 911 calls from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police warning about the chemicals leaking from those flooded cars. Officers warn that you may smell gasoline near that creek, and you should not drink that water.
