CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Vandals caused $58,000 worth of damage to two Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools overnight. At Butler High School, 14 mobile classrooms were torn apart. The vandals broke through windows and climbed inside. Once in the classrooms, they broke TV’s and computers, sprayed fire extinguishers and wrote profane notes all over the walls. "It makes me sick," said East Learning Community Area Superintendent Nancy Bartles. Bartles also oversees Northeast Middle School, which was also damaged, but likely not by the same vandals.Fifty-four windows were broken at that school overnight. "Taxpayers will have to pay for this. The money will have to come from somewhere, and it's not good for kids," Bartles said. Matthews police said they do not have any suspects, but said there are several cameras all over Butler's campus and they're currently reviewing those videotapes. Bartles said it wouldn't surprise her if the vandals are Butler students. Police feel the same way. "It's often times students, or it could be acquaintances of students or former students," said Matthews Police Capt. Carla Thompson. Police said they also suspect it was a group of people who did the vandalism and suspect they’ve already been talking about it.Investigators are asking anyone who knows who vandalized Butler to call Matthews police at 704-847-4069. Matthews officers said they'll work closely with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to see if the vandalism cases are related.
