New Mobile Arrest Centers Ready For 4th Of July Uptown

Thursday, July 3, 2008 – updated: 7:50 am EDT July 4, 2008

For the first time ever, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police will have a mobile processing unit for anyone who gets arrested in Uptown Charlotte on July 4.

Police hope to build off last year's success when there was no violence, but almost 170 arrests.

Police said they decided to try a mobile processing unit because of the arrests they've made in years past.

They hope the Mecklenburg County Jail will not see a backlog. Police do not want to reveal the exact location. They hope the processing center will get them back on the street faster this year.

Only an Eyewitness News crew was there Thursday evening as firefighters worked to put up tents for the unit.

  • Police said it's just a small part of the preparations underway for the July Fourth celebrations.

"No one gets the day off. They'll be an obvious police presence," said Sgt. Amy Brady.

No one in the CMPD's Central division will receive the holiday off.

There will be hundreds of extra officers on bikes, segways and on foot in Uptown as well as in and around Memorial Stadium for the fireworks show.

"We want everyone to come downtown, have great time," said Sgt. Brady. "But our tolerance for misbehavior or breaking the law is like--zero."

That's good news to Jamey Messick, of Charlotte, who said he and his wife plan to be Uptown Friday night.

"For the most of us that are just out here having a good time, it'll be nice to have someone watching our backs for it," said Messick.
