UNDATED, N.C. -- North Carolina state troopers started their holiday weekend by cracking down on speeders and drunk drivers.

Troopers said this holiday weekend is more dangerous because it falls on a Friday. That makes it a long weekend, giving people more days to party.

Eyewitness News crews got the chance to ride along with troopers as they watched the roads. Trooper Brian Huffstickler said there are obvious things to watch out for such as speeding, weaving and following too closely.

But there are some not so obvious signs that clue troopers in that a drive may be drunk. Troopers told our news crew, driving too slow on the highway, riding with your blinker on for a long time and not changing lanes, and changing speeds abruptly are signs that someone is driving impaired.

Trooper Huffstickler said drunk driving is a big concern. And even when you drive home the next morning you could still be too drunk to drive on the road.

“For people trying to get back to their houses before work on Monday, they’re going to be tired. Some of them won’t be aware of this, but they’ll still be impaired. They’ll still have alcohol in their system,” said Trooper Huffstickler.

While our news crews rode along with troopers, they witnessed two DWI arrests. Troopers pulled over one man after driving 119 mph in a 55 zone along Interstate 77.
