ALBEMARLE, N.C. -- Three Albemarle High School students were killed in a crash just before midnight. The students, all rising seniors, were traveling south on N.C. 138 near Kimrey Road south of Albemarle when the driver ran of the road and overcorrected late Thursday.Friends and family are planning a special prayer service for three teens killed. Saturday's vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Saints Delight Church on Wall Street in Albemarle, N.C.Troopers said an oncoming pickup truck collided with the car on the passenger side. The driver of the car, Tevis Swearingen, and his passengers Justin Cowan and Andrico Lilly, all 17, died at the scene."Its just hard right now. So I can't lie and say it's easy, and act like we're making it through. It's not that easy. It's really a hard thing dealing with two losses at one time," said Cassandra Christian, a cousin to Swearingen and Cowan. The high school’s athletic director and head football coach said Swearingen was on the varsity football team and Cowan used to be on the football team. He said the loss will be difficult for players."I'm sure that they will have their own ways of remembering these players. They'll really come together as a community and as a team," said Baxter Morris. Two others were also injured in the crash. Officials said DeAngelo Martin, 18, was the only one breathing in the car when paramedics arrived so they cut him out of the vehicle first. He was taken to Stanly Regional Hospital and then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition. The driver of the truck was also taken to Stanly Regional, where he was treated and released.Kim Scott, director of student services with Stanly County Schools, said she, social workers, community pastors and others have met with the families of the students.Troopers said they believe speed caused the crash, but they have not ruled out alcohol as a possible factor.
