Charlotte Woman Charged In Deadly Belmont Hit-And-Run

The Suspect Said She Had One Beer Before The Crash

Belmont police charged a woman several days after a deadly hit-and-run.

Charla Davis turned herself in to police Friday morning after the crash, but at that time police released her without filing any charges.

After interviewing witnesses, police charged Davis early Tuesday with two felony counts of hit-and-run, reckless driving and driving while her license was revoked.

As Davis walked out of her police interrogation Tuesday in handcuffs, she told an Eyewitness News camera, “I appreciate all of the publicity all over the news that has made life wonderful.”

As for the crash victims, she said, “Yes, I feel for all, all of . . . everybody involved.”

Keysha Adams, whose mother was one of three people struck on the U.S. 74 bridge, said Davis’ words anger her.

“I think she should feel sorry for herself because she is going to have to deal with the consequences behind this,” she said.

Adams’ mother, Betty Adams, was riding with her cousin Thursday night when he suffered a seizure right at the Mecklenburg County line. She and another passenger got out of the sport utility vehicle to attend to him. Ronnie Eudy, a truck driver, also stopped on the Catawba River bridge to see if he could help.

Police said Davis drove across the bridge, hit the three Good Samaritans and kept going.

Eudy died a short time after the crash. He was laid to rest Tuesday.

Jerry Ames Leach was treated and released from the hospital, but Betty Adams remains in intensive care.

“It just hurt me to go look at her every day in pain, suffering,” said Keysha Adams.

She said she thinks Davis should face charges stronger than felony hit and run.

“To me, anybody that leaves the scene is hiding something,” she said.

Belmont Police Chief David James also wants stronger charges.

“If we can prove impairment, we can bump the charge up to a second-degree murder charge,” he said.

Davis was sober when she turned herself in to police, but she admitted she was at Tony’s bar near the wreck site Thursday night. The chief said she claims she had just one beer.

“We are hoping this will maybe generate some interest from anybody who knew her whereabouts prior to the accident,” James said.

Davis is being held on $750,000 bond. She’ll make her first appearance in court Wednesday.
