CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A jury convicted a Charlotte man on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of two teens killed 15 years ago.

Antwan Sanders was found guilty in the deaths of Raylynn Chelton and Tasha Lopes just after 5 p.m. Monday. He was also found guilty of two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery and one count of first-degree sexual offense.

Chelton and Lopes were kidnapped, robbed, sexually assaulted and shot to death in northwest Charlotte in 1993.

The jury began deliberating the case on Friday. Sanders’ attorneys argued all week that although the defendant was present during the crimes, he did not participate. Sanders claimed the two men he was with killed the teens.

It took investigators more than 10 years to make arrests.

Sanders was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences plus 24 years in prison on two kidnapping charges.

In court, Sanders addressed both of the victim's families. He said: "I never took your daughters' lives. I will always be sorry, but I never did anything to them."

The words meant little to Chelton's mother, Bonnie Jones.

"He's apologizing for something that he did, that he sat up on the stand and said he didn't do," Bonnie Jones said. "What kind of an apology is that?"

Sanders' lawyer said he is appealing the conviction.
