Woman, 18, Sought In Shooting Death Of 14-Year-Old Charlotte Girl

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 – updated: 9:22 am EDT August 20, 2008

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police looked Tuesday night for a 18-year-old woman in connection with the killing of a 14-year-old girl. Police said Ashante Mayfield was shot and killed after an argument between her and Vanessa Hines turned deadly Tuesday afternoon.

Naijm Branham heard gunshots and ran outside around 4:30 p.m. and saw Mayfield fall out of the back of a car on Catherine Simmons Avenue off Beatties Ford Road.

"I came outside cause it could have been one of mine," Branham said. "Bullets don't have names; ain't no telling where they're gonna go."

Detectives signed warrants for Hines and believe she fled the scene on a CATS bus. They said someone helped her by removing a gun from the crime scene. That's something police Chief Rodney Monroe told Eyewitness News angers him.

"Anytime you have a 14-year-old killed over something we consider petty, it's disheartening, it's disappointing and, I'll use my words carefully, but it angers me," he said.

The tragedy hit a little too close to home for Branham, knowing her two teenagers will start school on Monday and 14 year old Mayfield won't.

"I can only imagine what her mama's feeling right now," Branham said.

If you see or know where the suspect, Vanessa Hines is, you are asked to call 911. You can also call the new homicide line, 704-432-TIPS and speak to a detective.
