Teen's Murder Angers Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 – updated: 11:19 pm EDT August 19, 2008

Charlotte-Mecklenburg's Police Chief Rodney Monroe was very outspoken about Tuesday's homicide at a community meeting that night.

Monroe was a few minutes late to the University City Division meeting, held at Vance High School.

He had just left the homicide scene on Beatties Ford Road. It was clear what was on his mind when he arrived to the meeting.

"It's senseless. It's just so senseless," Monroe told the crowd.

Monroe said he was not just upset about a 14-year-old being gunned down, but the fact that people tried to hide evidence and even helped the suspect leave the scene.

"Anytime a 14-year-old is killed, over something we consider petty, it's disappointing, it's disheartening, and it angers me," said Monroe.

The crowd of nearly 100 also brought other issues to the chief including issues with home burglaries and car break-in's in North Charlotte.

Monroe said he's been in discussion with the district attorney's office about adopting "community prosecutors."

He said it would work a lot like community policing; where officers can tailor their patrols and preventative measures based on specific problems for one community.

Prosecutors would be assigned to divisions, so they'd know what issues need to be resolved there.

Monroe would like to pilot the program in two divisions to see how it works, but hasn't chosen which divisions.
